Ambassador Warlick Visits Zlatibor and Uzice

May 30, 2012

Ambassador Warlick made her first visit to Uzice and Cajetina on May 30, where she met with local officials, Embassy partners, and representatives of Zlatibor’s successful tourist industry. In Uzice, Ambassador Warlick met with Mayor Jovan Markovic and discussed a range of political and economic issues and the longstanding partnership between the city and the United States Embassy.

In nearby Zlakusa, Ambassador Warlick visited the rural household Terzica avlija, whose owner, Sasa Drndarevic, offered an extensive tour of the property. He and his colleagues introduced the Ambassador to his museum, Zlakusa’s famous pottery tradition, local songs, and the national costumes of the Uzice/Zlatibor region. In 2008 Drndarević was part of a group of 10 dynamic professionals who participated in a three-week exchange program on rural tourism in Wisconsin and Minnesota. Later, in partnership with the National Employment Agency, the Ministry of Economy and Regional Development, the City of Uzice, and the Pottery Association of Zlakusa, the Embassy supported two Drndarevic projects aimed at building the capacity of unemployed youth and women from this predominantly rural area.
